Blaisdell, to the many Zippo employees, customers, and collectors who have all played a vital role in the company’s rich history.  Their loyalty and dedication has made Zippo one of America’s greatest and most recognizable icons."

About Zippo

Founded in 1932 by George G. Blaisdell, in Bradford Pennsylvania, Zippo has earned a stand up reputation and is known for their quality and guarantee.

1930s - Mr. Blaisdell noticed a friend struggling to use an Australian made lighter. He kept the chimney design but included a case with a hinge to open the top. Naming "Zippo", Mr. Blaisdell enjoyed the way "zipper" sounded and settled on the word "Zippo".

1940s - Production of Zippo lighters were made for the US Military.

1950s - The custom Zippo became available

1960s - Concert goers raised their Zippo's during gatherings which became known as the "Zippo movement". Zippo also started production for their first non lighter product, a tape measurer.

1970s - Zippo's founder, Mr. Blaisdell passed away on October 3rd, 1978. The 70s were a year to expand to overseas markets.

1980s - Zippo was owned by 6 family members including Blaisdell's daughters and their children.

1990s - Zippo acquired W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company. Zippo also opened a Zippo case museum in 1997.

2000s - Zippo launches several multi purpose lighters (refillable utility-style lighter)

2010s - Zippo acquired Ronson brand lighters and Ronsonol brand fuel. The metal hand warmer was introduced along with camping gear and fire accessories.

Today - George B. Duke, Mr. Blaisdell's grandson is the sole owner. The Zippo brand continues to grow.
